At LEWS Academy, we believe learning should feel like play. Games are not a break from real learning — they are the fastest way to build fluency. Here are five games you can start today at home.
1. The naming game. Walk around your home and name everything you see in English — out loud. "Fridge. Curtain. Remote control. Charging cable." If you do not know a word, look it up immediately and use it three times. This builds your vocabulary without flashcards.
2. Story chain. Start a story with one sentence: "Yesterday I went to the market." Add one sentence at a time. If you are alone, alternate between two characters. This trains you to think and speak in full sentences without pausing to translate.
3. Describe and guess. Pick an object in the room and describe it without saying its name. "It is round, you put food in it, it gets hot." If you are with someone, they guess. If alone, time yourself for 30 seconds of description. This builds the skill of explaining — one of the most important real-life English skills.
4. Shadow a video. Play a short video clip in English. Pause after each sentence and repeat it exactly — same speed, same energy, same intonation. Then try playing and repeating at the same time. Five minutes of shadowing daily improves your accent and natural rhythm faster than any textbook.
5. The who-what-where game. Write three columns: Who, What, Where. Fill each with random words: Who — teacher, dog, president; What — cooking, running, singing; Where — park, kitchen, moon. Then make three sentences combining one from each column: "The dog is cooking in the park." Silly sentences force creative English thinking.
