How Cambridge Rounds IELTS Scores
IELTS calculates the mean of your 4 subscores. If the decimal fraction is:
- • Ends in .25: Rounds UP to the next half band (e.g., 6.25 $\rightarrow$ 6.5).
- • Ends in .75: Rounds UP to the next whole band (e.g., 6.75 $\rightarrow$ 7.0).
- • Ends in .125: Rounds DOWN to the nearest whole band (e.g., 6.125 $\rightarrow$ 6.0).
- • Ends in .375 or .625: Rounds UP to .5 (e.g., 6.375 $\rightarrow$ 6.5).

The overall IELTS band score is the arithmetic average of your four individual component scores (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking), rounded to the nearest half or whole band according to Cambridge English Assessment official rounding rules. If the average ends in .25, it rounds up to the next half band (e.g., 6.25 becomes 6.5). If it ends in .75, it rounds up to the next whole band (e.g., 6.75 becomes 7.0). If it ends in .125, it rounds down to the nearest whole band (e.g., 6.125 becomes 6.0).
In IELTS Academic, texts are drawn from professional journals, academic research papers, and analytical books with complex syntax and dense vocabulary. In IELTS General Training, texts in Sections 1 and 2 are drawn from workplace notices, company handbooks, and advertisements. Because the General Training texts are less linguistically dense, Cambridge requires more correct answers for the same band: to score Band 7.0 in General Reading, you must score 34–35 correct out of 40, whereas in Academic Reading, 30–32 correct achieves Band 7.0.
