Speak English With Confidence

Quick Summary: Shyness is the biggest barrier to fluent English — not grammar. Here are 5 strategies Shaista uses to help students break through the fear barrier.

If you understand English but freeze when it is time to speak, you are not alone. Thousands of talented people across Pakistan stay silent in interviews, meetings and classrooms — not because they lack knowledge, but because shyness holds them back.

The good news: shyness is not permanent. It is a habit, and habits can be changed. Here are five strategies that Shaista uses every day with her students at LEWS Academy.

1. Start with yourself, not an audience. Practice speaking English alone — in front of a mirror, recording a voice note, or narrating your day. The goal is to get your mouth used to producing English without the pressure of being judged. Sixty seconds of mirror talk every morning rewires your brain faster than you think.

2. Use the 3-second rule. When you see someone you could talk to, count 3… 2… 1… and open your mouth before your brain invents excuses. Your first line does not need to be perfect — a simple "Hi, how are you?" is enough. Confidence is not the absence of fear; it is acting before fear finishes speaking.

3. Celebrate every sentence. Did you order coffee in English? That is a win. Did you answer a question without freezing? That is a win. Shy learners focus on mistakes; confident learners focus on progress. Start a mental tally of every English sentence you speak today.

4. Join a small, friendly group. Speaking alone is step one. Speaking with safe, supportive people is step two. LEWS Academy groups are max 8 students — small enough that everyone speaks, gets heard, and gets gentle correction. No one is ever laughed at.

5. Accept imperfection. Native speakers make mistakes too. The goal is communication, not perfection. Every sentence you speak — even with errors — is better than the perfect sentence you never said.
