IELTS Academic uses vocabulary that appears in universities, journals and professional contexts. Pakistani students who prepare for IELTS often focus on grammar and reading strategies but neglect the specific vocabulary that examiners reward. Learning the right words makes a measurable difference in your score.

Words for describing trends. Increase, decrease, rise, fall, fluctuate, remain stable, peak, decline, surge, plummet, level off, reach a high of, drop to. These words appear in almost every IELTS Writing Task 1. Using "surge" instead of "go up" demonstrates vocabulary range.

Words for giving opinions. I maintain that, I contend that, I am inclined to believe, it is widely acknowledged, it is often argued, from my perspective, I would argue that. These phrases strengthen your Writing Task 2 and Speaking Part 3 responses beyond basic "I think."

Words for cause and effect. Consequently, as a result, therefore, hence, thus, due to, owing to, this leads to, this contributes to, as a consequence. These connectors show the examiner that you can link ideas logically — a key criterion for Band 7 in Writing.

Words for comparison and contrast. Conversely, however, nevertheless, on the other hand, in contrast, whereas, while, although, despite, notwithstanding. These words allow you to present balanced arguments, which is essential for Discussion essays in Task 2.

Words for addition and emphasis. Furthermore, moreover, in addition, additionally, what is more, significantly, notably, particularly, especially, above all. These words strengthen your arguments and show the examiner that you can layer ideas effectively.

How to study these words. Pick five words per day. Write a sample IELTS paragraph using all five. Read it aloud to practice pronunciation. Then write another paragraph the next day using the previous day's words plus five new ones. After ten days, you will have 50 academic words that you can use confidently in any IELTS task. Shaista includes targeted vocabulary sessions in every IELTS preparation course at LEWS Academy, ensuring students practice these words in context rather than in isolation.
