The app store is flooded with English learning apps, and choosing the right ones wastes time and money. Not all apps are created equal — some are excellent for vocabulary, others for grammar, and a few for speaking practice. Here are the best options for each purpose.

For vocabulary: Anki. Anki uses spaced repetition — it shows you flashcards at intervals that match your memory. Words you know well appear less often; words you struggle with appear more frequently. It is free, highly customizable, and the most scientifically effective vocabulary tool available. Shaista recommends Anki to every LEWS Academy student for self-study vocabulary building.

For grammar: British Council LearnEnglish. The British Council's free app offers clear grammar explanations with interactive exercises. The grammar is organized by level — beginner, intermediate and advanced — making it easy to find exactly what you need. Each lesson takes five to ten minutes, perfect for daily practice.

For speaking: HelloTalk. HelloTalk connects you with native English speakers who want to learn your language. You text, voice chat and correct each other. It is the closest thing to having a conversation partner in your pocket. The free version offers enough features for regular practice.

For listening: BBC Learning English. The BBC Learning English app provides daily audio and video content at different levels. 6 Minute English is perfect for beginners. The app also includes transcripts so you can read along while listening — a powerful technique for improving comprehension.

For pronunciation: ELSA Speak. ELSA uses AI to analyze your pronunciation and give you instant feedback on specific sounds. It identifies exactly which sounds you need to improve and provides targeted exercises. The free version covers basic pronunciation; the paid version offers comprehensive feedback.

For daily habit: Duolingo. Duolingo gamifies learning with streaks, points and daily challenges. It is not enough on its own for serious learners, but it is excellent for building a daily English habit. The key is to use it as a warm-up, not your entire study session.

The best app is the one you use daily. No single app will make you fluent. The most effective approach is to combine two or three apps — one for vocabulary, one for listening, one for speaking — and use them consistently. At LEWS Academy, Shaista helps students select the right combination based on their current level and goals, ensuring that technology supports — rather than replaces — structured learning.
