IELTS Writing Task 2: Essay Structure

IELTS Writing Task 2 is worth twice as much as Task 1 and requires a minimum 250-word essay. Many candidates struggle not because their English is poor, but because they do not organize their ideas clearly. A simple, reliable essay structure solves this problem.

The four-paragraph structure. Paragraph 1: Introduction (state your position). Paragraph 2: First main reason with explanation and example. Paragraph 3: Second main reason with explanation and example. Paragraph 4: Conclusion (summarize your position). This works for agree/disagree, opinion, and discussion essays.

Write a strong introduction. Your introduction has two jobs: paraphrase the question and state your opinion in one clear sentence. For example: "Some people believe that university education should be free for everyone. I strongly disagree because the financial burden would be unsustainable for governments." The examiner reads your introduction first — make it count.

Use topic sentences to start each body paragraph. The first sentence of each body paragraph should clearly state the main idea. "The primary reason university fees should remain is cost" or "Another significant benefit of small classes is individual attention." This tells the examiner exactly what the paragraph will discuss and shows coherent organization.

Develop ideas with reasons and examples. Never just state an opinion without backing it up. After your topic sentence, explain why, then give a specific example. "Students who pay for their education tend to value it more. For instance, in countries where tuition is free, dropout rates are often higher because students take their enrollment for granted." Reason plus example equals a strong paragraph.

Avoid memorized templates. Examiners can spot a memorized essay instantly, and it hurts your score. Instead, learn the structure — introduction, body, body, conclusion — and fill it with genuine, relevant ideas for each specific question. Templates limit your vocabulary score.

Manage your time. Spend five minutes planning, ten minutes writing, and five minutes checking. The planning time is not wasted — it prevents you from running out of ideas halfway through and having to start a new paragraph in a rush.
