English has over 170,000 words in current use, but you do not need to know them all. The most frequently used 100 words account for approximately half of everything written and spoken in English. Mastering these first gives you a powerful base to build on.
Function words are the backbone. Words like the, is, are, was, were, have, has, do, does, will, would, can, could, should, may, might, and must appear in almost every sentence. You cannot form a single English sentence without them. These words carry grammar, not meaning — but without them, communication is impossible.
Personal pronouns and possessives. I, you, he, she, it, we, they, me, him, her, us, them, my, your, his, its, our, their. These are the first words children learn in any language. Master them immediately — mistakes with pronouns are immediately noticeable to native speakers.
Essential verbs. Be, have, do, say, go, get, make, know, think, take, come, see, look, want, give, use, find, tell, ask, work, seem, feel, try, leave, call. These 25 verbs cover the vast majority of everyday actions. Learn their present, past and past participle forms.
Everyday nouns. Time, year, people, way, day, man, woman, child, world, life, hand, part, place, case, week, company, system, program, question, work, government, number, night, point, home. These nouns appear in news, conversation and business contexts constantly.
Practical adjectives. Good, new, first, last, long, great, little, own, other, old, right, big, high, small, large, next, young, important, few, public, bad, same, able. These describe the world around you and are the building blocks of more complex descriptions.
How to learn them effectively. Do not sit with a list trying to memorize all 100 at once. Instead, learn 10 per day. Write each in a sentence, say it out loud, and use it in a conversation that day.
