Why Small Groups Beat Big Classes

If you have ever sat in a large English class, you know the feeling: the teacher talks, some students answer, and many sit quietly hoping not to be called on. This is how people attend classes for years without improving their speaking.

The problem with big classes. In a class of 20 or 30 students, each person gets maybe 2“3 minutes of actual speaking time per session. The rest is listening. But English fluency is built by speaking, not listening. You cannot learn to swim by watching others.

The small group advantage. In LEWS Academy classes (maximum 8 students), every person speaks in every class. If a class is 45 minutes, each student gets 10“15 minutes of active speaking time — five to seven times more than a large class.

Personal correction. In a small group, the teacher hears every sentence you say and can correct mistakes gently, immediately and privately. In a large class, the teacher cannot possibly listen to everyone. Errors become habits that go uncorrected for months.

Psychological safety. Research in education consistently shows that students learn best when they feel safe. In groups of 6“8, students form a bond. They support each other, laugh together and gradually lose the fear of making mistakes. This psychological safety is the single biggest factor in language learning.

Accountability and progress. Small groups create natural accountability — the teacher knows your name, your level and your goals. Monthly progress updates ensure you always know where you stand and what to work on next.
