Body Language for English Speakers

Quick Summary: How you stand, gesture and make eye contact affects how confident you feel — and how confident others perceive you. Small changes make a big difference.

Language learning is not just about words and grammar. Your body communicates too — and research shows that confident body language can actually make you feel more confident. These practical tips work in conversations, presentations and interviews.

Stand or sit tall. Slouching signals insecurity — both to others and to your own brain. Keep your shoulders back, your chin parallel to the floor and your feet planted firmly on the ground. This posture sends a signal to your nervous system that you are safe and in control.

Use open gestures. Keep your arms uncrossed and your hands visible. Small, natural hand gestures while speaking show engagement and confidence. Avoid fidgeting, touching your face or gripping the table — these are nervous signals that increase your anxiety.

Make eye contact — but not too much. In English-speaking cultures, steady eye contact shows confidence and interest. Aim to look at the person you are speaking to for about 60 to 70 percent of the conversation. Look away occasionally to think, then return your gaze naturally.

Smile when you start speaking. A genuine smile relaxes your facial muscles, reduces tension, and makes the listener more receptive. When you greet someone in English with a warm smile, the interaction starts on a positive note — even if your grammar is not perfect.

Mirror confident speakers. Watch English speakers on YouTube or in movies. Notice how they stand, how they use their hands, how they pause. Then practice these same physical habits while speaking English alone. Your body does not know the difference — it responds to the posture regardless of whether the audience is real.

At LEWS Academy, Shaista integrates body language practice into speaking sessions. Students practice standing, gesturing and making eye contact while speaking English — and the improvement in their confidence is immediate and visible.
