Stop Fearing Mistakes in English

Quick Summary: The fear of making mistakes keeps more people silent than any grammar rule. Learn why mistakes are not your enemy — they are the fastest path to fluency.

Ask any fluent English speaker about their learning journey, and they will tell you about hundreds of mistakes. Every error was a lesson. The difference between fluent speakers and silent ones is not talent — it is the willingness to make mistakes and learn from them.

Mistakes are feedback, not failure. When you say "I goed" instead of "I went," your brain receives a signal: this rule needs attention. That signal is valuable. Without it, you would never improve. Native English-speaking children make thousands of grammar errors before they speak correctly — adults learning English are no different.

Perfectionism kills fluency. If you refuse to speak until every word is perfect, you will never speak at all. The truth is, native speakers make mistakes constantly — dropped consonants, wrong prepositions, incomplete sentences. Communication happens through imperfect English every day around the world.

Your mistakes are not as visible as you think. Research shows that listeners focus on the overall message, not individual errors. When you order food in English with a small grammar mistake, the waiter hears your request — not the missing "s" on the verb. Your mistakes feel massive to you but are barely noticeable to others.

Keep a mistake journal. Write down errors you notice or that are corrected. Review it once a week. You will notice the same mistakes disappearing as your brain absorbs the corrections. Shaista encourages every LEWS Academy student to maintain one, and those who do show the fastest improvement.

Celebrate corrected mistakes. When someone corrects you, say "thank you" and remember the correction. You just got a free mini-lesson. In LEWS Academy small groups, corrections happen gently and privately — the environment is designed so that mistakes feel safe, not shameful.

The goal is not to never make mistakes. The goal is to make new mistakes — ones you have not made before — because that means you are pushing into territory you have never spoken in before. That is where real growth lives.
