Read Aloud makes up a significant portion of your PTE Speaking score — and because PTE uses AI scoring, your pronunciation and fluency are evaluated at the word level. This means every single word you read matters. Here is how to approach it strategically.

Use the preparation time wisely. You get 30 to 40 seconds before each Read Aloud. Do not just stare at the text — read it silently first, identify difficult words, and mentally practice the pronunciation. Mark where you will pause. This small investment dramatically improves your actual reading.

Read at a natural, steady pace. Many candidates rush through the text to finish before the timer runs out. This backfires because the AI cannot understand mumbled or rushed words. Read at a moderate pace — about 130 to 150 words per minute — where every word is clear and distinct.

Focus on content words, not function words. Content words carry meaning — nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs. Function words — the, a, is, of, in — are less important for stress. Stress your content words: "The ENGLISH language has MANY RULES that seem CONTRADICTORY." This pattern makes you sound natural and helps the AI score you higher.

Do not stop to correct yourself. If you mispronounce a word, keep going. The AI scores fluency based on your speech rate and pausing patterns. Stopping and restarting destroys your fluency score. A small mispronunciation costs you less than a long pause.

Practice with academic texts. PTE Read Aloud passages come from academic and professional contexts — science, history, business, technology. Read English news articles, journal abstracts and textbook passages aloud daily. This builds familiarity with the vocabulary and sentence structures you will encounter.

Record and listen to yourself. Use your phone to record your Read Aloud practice. Listen for words where you hesitate, repeat, or mispronounce. Focus your practice on those specific words. Shaista reviews Read Aloud recordings with PTE students at LEWS Academy, and targeted practice on weak words is what moves scores fastest.
